ARTIST NOTE

It is like taking a walk in winter-time, when the fresh snow has just fallen. The snow leaves a white blanket, creating a serenity and stillness that is inviting. Everything looks different; shapes are softened and sounds only whisper - a different energy is noticeable. The strong contrast of the white and black from the materials like the pure white Hanji-paper, as freshly fallen snow and the black paper thread, almost like leafless tree branches. These materials I used for this project gave me the same inviting feeling as a winter-walk. While feeling the texture and researching the characteristics I found myself looking with curious eyes upon materials I never used before. Just by sitting in my studio and touching the materials, I fell in love and so the inspiration came quite easy. The black paper thread I used in different ways: woven loosely in a white cotton warp and weft, creating lines or ‘footsteps’ and more roughly woven full of texture. The element of play and mixing various ways of knotting, looping created this whole new line of weaving designs. Open and dense, raw and sensitive, all the designs have a natural and organic feel. The elements of form, the fall of light and shadows where a starting point for using the Hanji paper. Not by bluntly cutting the attractive handmade papers but by gently tearing it in certain shapes.  Just by moulding and folding the pieces of papers into certain directions, objects appeared. I didn’t want to force anything I wanted them to be simple and delicate. The same goes for the embossed paper sheets, here I pressed my own textured weavings into the paper, giving the paper a slight imprint, hinting at the form like hidden under freshly fallen snow Working with Hanji-paper and the paper thread was an enriching experience because of their unfamiliarity They made me aware of a quality and uniqueness, which is a joy to work with and also a logical follow up to the range of materials like horsehair and other natural plant fibers I already use. I also rediscovered play and a way of experimenting which is a welcome addition to my weaving practice.
